This album puts the “pain” in painting, but owning it would undoubtedly be a collector’s joy.  A group of nine Chinese export gouache paintings depicts Qing Dynasty torture scenes and is expertly executed (pun intended :-)).  You have your choice of scenes: hair pulling, imprisonment devices, a beheading, a rotting corpse and knife play – oh my!  The subject matter may be ugly, but the beauty of the artistry displayed cannot be denied.  Technique is defined by fine brushwork, a vibrant color palette, subtle shading and attention to detail.  A stylistically like-minded painting album sold in May of this year at Michaan’s for a price realized of $12,980 (estimate $600-800).  This album will be sold along with a two figure painting book in the Asian Decorative Arts Auction on Monday, October the 7th at an estimate of $500-700 (lot 2213).  Please join us for previews beginning on Friday the 4th until the day of sale – promise, it won’t hurt a bit.
