Blue-Glazed Vessel Makes Major Green

If there is such a thing as sales kismet, it seems to have happened yesterday in Michaan’s Auctions Fine Asian Works of Art Auction.  The story begins in a small antique shop in Fresno.  A couple was leisurely browsing when they notice an Asian blue-glazed porcelain vessel with a price tag of $150.  Although they are intrigued, the couple decide to hold off on making a purchase.  They come back to the shop a second time where they then speak with the owner about it.  Sensing their interest, the owner makes them an offer of $100.  The couple remains unsold and it takes a third visit with a $50 price tag to make the sale.

Fast forward to Michaan’s Auctions.  The curious couple brings the lidded vessel to Asian Art Specialist Harry Huang.  Harry is floored when he sees their “bargain buy,” which is in fact a fine archaistic piece from the Qing Dynasty.  Harry informs them that they have an exquisite work of art on their hands and duly tucks it into the Fine Asian Works of Art auction at an estimate of $7,000-9,000.

Harry knows his stuff.  The blue-glazed molded archaistic ritual vessel and cover sold as lot 9253 yesterday for (drum roll please)…$26,550.  A comparable yellow vessel with cover sold in Michaan’s Fine Asian Works of Art Auction in December of 2011 for $14,040 and a similar piece of this caliber was also sold in Christie’s Hong Kong Imperial Auction on May 30, 2006 for $14,000.

Snapshots from the Sale: Fine Asian Works of Art – rhinoceros horn libation cup

Asian Art Specialist Harry Huang:
“I am very excited to present another rhinoceros horn libation cup to the marketplace.  We saw great success with a libation cup we sold in June that brought over $70,000.  This horn cup is another wonderful example, with a variation on the decorative scheme.  The chilong dragons, lychee and floral motifs are superbly carved.” Lot 9071, $20,000-30,000.

Snapshots from the Sale: Modern Furniture and Decorations

20th Century Modern Design Specialist Greg Favors:
“Many in the art world consider Mavis McClure to be one of the most talented figurative artists of the decade.  She is also self taught which I admire.  These would work great in a garden, living room or foyer.  I look at the pair as one piece and I believe this was also the intention of the artist.  But if you wanted to break them up or display the statue as pieces that might also be interesting.”  Lot 3444, $8,000-10,000.

Jewelry Department Director Rhonda Harness:
“This one of a kind piece is an absolute show stopper, epitomizing the Hollywood glamour of the 40s and 50s.  The quality and quantity of the stones in this bracelet are amazing and the retro style harkens back to classic silver screen sirens.  A portion of the proceeds from the sale of this bracelet will also be used to aid a mission in Africa, making it a beautiful piece in every way.”  Lot 3132, $25,000-30,000.

“This is a truly special piece from an iconic artist.  This John Dickinson game table is from the private estate of his longtime friend and business associate, Larry Maloney. Dickinson’s signature use of white lacquer atop hardwood is classic in its understated  style.  The provenance alone should have bidders clamoring for the piece.”  Lot 3421, $3,000-5,000.
